Edge Weekend
Agenda:
Saturday November 15th, Scouts will have the opportunity to take their first steps toward earning the Hiking Merit Badge (optional). This is the beginning of an exciting journey that builds outdoor skills, endurance, and confidence while exploring the beauty of nature.
We will be hiking the Palisades Long Path from Fort Lee, New Jersey, covering roughly 11 miles back to Alpine Scout Camp. This scenic section of Palisades Interstate Park follows the iconic Long Path trail, offering hikers breathtaking views of dramatic cliffs, dense woodlands, and the Hudson River. Beginning near the George Washington Bridge, the trail winds north along both the top and base of the Palisades, passing historic overlooks, quiet picnic spots, and striking natural landmarks along the way. It’s a challenging but rewarding hike and the perfect way to kick off the journey toward earning the Hiking Merit Badge.
What to know about E.D.G.E………
Scouts are asked to present a topic of their choice related to scouting using the E.D.G.E, methodology (Explain, Demonstrate, Guide, Enable)
Each presentation should be between 5-15 minutes and must be approved by leadership on the October 30th meeting. Once ideas are approved, the scouts can begin to plan out their presentations to the group, utilizing whatever they feel necessary to convey their message including props, drawings, flash cards, etc. Our goal for this weekend is to encourage the scouts to feel comfortable in presenting to their peers and leaders alike, creating a foundation for confidence in expressing ideas to a group.
Some recent ideas for example:
Learn to play a song on guitar
Public speaking
How to make beef jerky
How to use various bows and arrow
How to tie fishing hooks/line
Building a stretcher from blankets and logs

Klondike
Agenda:
The Quail Hill Klondike Derby (part of Monmouth Council Scouting) is a winter outdoor challenge where Scouts pull homemade sleds with gear to stations, testing Scoutcraft skills like firebuilding, first aid, orienteering, and knot tying, all while learning teamwork, leadership, and outdoor survival in a fun, competitive event based on the Klondike Gold Rush. Scouts must carry everything needed on their sled, including essential clothing, to complete various themed challenges and earn points.
Key Aspects:
Theme: A modern take on the historical Klondike Gold Rush, focusing on winter survival and Scouting skills.
Equipment: Teams build and pull a sled (sledge) carrying all their supplies, including gear, food, and even emergency items, over a course.
Activities: Stations test skills like fire building, first aid, shelter building, compass use, knots, and team challenges.
Teamwork: Emphasizes cooperation as patrols work together to complete tasks, often with adults present for Cub Scouts but not at stations for older Scouts.
Requirements: Scouts need Class A uniforms, neckerchiefs, a cup for hot chocolate, and a patrol flag on their sled.
In essence, it's a challenging, outdoor winter event where patrols learn and demonstrate essential Scouting skills while pulling their gear on a sled through various themed stations, fostering self-reliance and patrol spirit.
